Thoughtful answers to common questions about sex therapy, my practice, and how we can work together. If you don't see your question here, I'm always happy to talk during a free consultation.
Sex therapy is a specialized form of talk therapy that helps individuals and couples address challenges related to intimacy, desire, performance, and sexual health. It focuses on both emotional and relational aspects of sexuality, not just the physical. In sessions, we work together to reduce shame, process past experiences, and build healthier patterns for intimacy.
Anyone who feels blocked, anxious, or unfulfilled in their sexual or relational life. I work with individuals and couples experiencing:
No. While intimacy and sexuality are important parts of therapy, we also address the underlying emotional, relational, and sometimes traumatic factors that shape how you show up in relationships. Many clients find that therapy also improves self-esteem, communication, and overall well-being.
Sessions are talk-based and completely confidential. We'll start by identifying your goals, then use proven therapeutic methods such as trauma-informed therapy (including EMDR), Internal Family Systems (IFS), and systemic approaches to help you heal and grow. You'll never be asked to do anything sexual in session.
Yes. Like all therapy, your privacy and confidentiality are protected by law. Everything shared in session remains private, unless there's a legal requirement to disclose (such as risk of harm).
Yes. I accept most major insurance plans, including Aetna, Blue Cross/Blue Shield, and self pay. Most clients have minimal or no copay with their insurance coverage.
If you're paying out of pocket, sessions are $125. However, most clients use their insurance, which typically covers the majority of the cost. I'm happy to verify your benefits and explain your coverage during our consultation.
Yes. I provide in-person sessions in Barrington, IL, and secure virtual therapy sessions for clients who prefer to meet online.
The length of therapy depends on your goals and history. Some clients feel significant improvement within a few months; others continue longer for deeper healing and growth. Together, we'll create a plan that works at your pace.
Absolutely. My practice is inclusive, sex-positive, and affirming. I provide a safe, supportive space for LGBTQ+ individuals, people in non-traditional relationships, and those exploring kink or sexual identity.
Sex therapy addresses a wide range of concerns, including desire differences, performance anxiety, sexual trauma recovery, communication problems, intimacy issues, infidelity recovery, sexual identity exploration, body image concerns, and relationship patterns that affect sexual connection. Whether you're dealing with past trauma or simply want to enhance your intimate relationships, therapy can help.
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is an evidence-based therapy for trauma. It helps your brain reprocess painful memories so they no longer feel overwhelming. For sexual trauma survivors, EMDR can reduce triggers, flashbacks, and shame, making intimacy feel safer and more natural again.
IFS therapy views the mind as made up of different "parts"—like protective parts, wounded parts, or parts carrying shame. In sex therapy, IFS helps you understand how those inner voices affect intimacy, desire, and self-esteem. By learning to listen to and heal those parts, you can show up in relationships with more confidence and authenticity.
Systematic Sex Therapy looks at sexuality in the bigger picture of your life—your relationships, emotional health, body, and environment. Instead of focusing on just the physical side of sex, it explores how communication, trust, and life stressors affect intimacy. This holistic approach helps couples and individuals address root causes, not just symptoms.
No. You don't need to know anything about EMDR, IFS, or Systematic Sex Therapy to benefit. My role is to guide you and use whichever tools best support your healing and goals. Many clients simply describe what they're struggling with, and together we find the right approach.
Yes. EMDR and IFS are widely recognized, research-backed methods for trauma and emotional healing. Systematic Sex Therapy integrates proven psychological approaches to address both individual and relational intimacy. Everything we do is tailored to your comfort level and always at your pace.
